Overview

Have you always dreamed of standing atop the bottom of the world, on the summit of Mount Vinson 16,050 ft (4892 m)? Do you need a bit more cold weather climbing experience or want to brush up on the latest glacier travel techniques? We want to help you succeed and have prepared a custom training course suited to give you the best chance of reaching Vinson’s summit.

Arrive in Antarctica early for a technical training course that will help you hone the necessary skills for a successful summit bid. Our experienced guides will work with you on technical rope, ice axe, and crampon skills as well as general movement and mountaineering during a high mountain ascent. We’ll practice on glaciers, snow ridges, and exposed summits to give you a taste of all the different terrain you’ll encounter on Vinson. At the end of the course, you’ll be ready to take on your ultimate goal and will join the rest of your team for the flight to Vinson Base Camp.

Weather

The interior of Antarctica has a cold, dry, windy climate. Average mid-season temperatures at our base camp range from 10F to 25F (-12C to -4C ). On a sunny windless day it can feel quite warm but, when the wind blows, you will be glad of warm layers and a wind jacket. Temperatures can drop as low as -22F (-30C) in early November.

Mount Vinson climbers should prepare for extreme temperatures -40F (-40C) and severe storms.

Activity Level

Strenuous

Strenuous trips include skiing, climbing, and trekking trips where you spend several days or more in remote field camps and you are active for 6-8 hours a day over steeper, more rugged terrain. They can involve climbing and camping at altitude and in extreme weather conditions. These trips can be tailored to your skills and abilities, however a good level of fitness is essential and some technical skills may be required.

Skills and Experience

Although not technically difficult, Mount Vinson is a serious mountain due to its elevation, cold and remoteness. For our standard Mount Vinson Experience, we only accept participants whose mountaineering resumes indicate that they are capable of reaching the summit of Vinson under normal conditions. We look for experience on other high, cold mountains like Denali or Mount Logan. However, we also take into account winter alpine climbing, ice-climbing, ski-touring and expedition experience gained in other areas. There are no hard and fast rules and we look at each prospective participant on a case-by-case basis.

For Prep Vinson, guests need to arrive with a high level of fitness and be prepared for vigorous activity at altitudes up to 9800 ft (3000 m).
