The results are in for the 2012 Antarctic Ice Marathon!
The Men’s Race
Dr Andrew Murray (GBR) won the men’s marathon in a new course record of 3:41.15 hrs. The 32 year old GP, who has run more than 50 marathons, said this was ‘one of his best’. Murray went on to run a 50km race, as the start of his seven x 50km races, on seven continents in seven days.
The Women’s Race
The women’s title was taken by ‘honeymooner’ Demelza Farr (AUS), with a time of 5:09.43 hrs. Farr and her husband James Alderson (who ran the Antarctic 100K Ultra) flew to Union Glacier as part of their honeymoon. Alderson proposed at the North Pole Marathon earlier this year and the two were recently married. They will now head off for a more traditional honeymoon in warmer climes! Second place went to ALE’s Nancy Moundalexis (USA), with a time of 5:41.40 hrs.
The 100K
The Antarctic 100K Ultra saw a field of seven runners compete on a 10km course. ALE’s own weather forecaster, Marc De Keyser (BEL), won the men’s race with a time of 12:06.51 hrs. ALE facility manager Ian Storey (GBR) also put in a solid performance, with a time of 14:33.47 hrs. Sole female competitor Julianne Young (USA) completed the course in 15:31.10 hrs.
In all, 50 competitors representing 16 countries competed in the events, 11 of whom were completing the last of their seven marathons on seven continents. Congratulations to all.
