Q: What brought you to ALE?
Antarctica…and then reviewing ALE’s website. My first though was “People get to do this every year? And it’s a job? And any you get paid?” It all sounded amazing and I immediately want to be a part of that adventure.
What I enjoy most about procurement and logistics is how fundamental they are to the way the world works. Almost everything we rely on—from food and medicine to technology and infrastructure—exists because complex exchanges of information resulted in sourced materials and moved them where they needed to go. My academic background is in economics, and I like observing how resources move through systems, the real-world mechanisms that make that movement possible.
One of my favorite hobbies is buying older cars—up to 20 years old—repairing them, and then donating them to struggling students, families, or individuals who could benefit from having a dependable car. It’s a practical way to help people solve a real problem, and I also enjoy the mechanical challenge of bringing an older vehicle back into good working condition. Also, 3D printing.
My wife and I moved to Utah from Seattle in 2009. At the time, we were thinking a lot about the kind of environment we wanted to raise our kids in. Utah stood out to us because of its strong sense of community, access to the outdoors, and overall quality of life.
I haven’t participated in improv, but I’m a big fan of it. I really enjoy the creativity and quick thinking that improv performers bring to the stage. Recently, my wife and I have been going to shows at ImprovBroadway in Provo.
One country that really stands out to me is Brazil. It’s an incredibly diverse and vibrant country with beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and warm, welcoming people. I’ve been to Rio, São Paulo, Curitiba, Londrina, and Manaus. The energy of the cities combined with the Pão de Queijo (cheese bread) and rodizio-style dining makes it a memorable place to visit, and it’s a destination I’m particularly fond of.
I can’t whistle.😄
