Cross-country skiing has a long and storied heritage in Antarctica. Amundsen’s team was the first to reach the South Pole and their skiing ability was a key element to their success. ALE is proud to offer our newest experience to celebrate this key element of Antarctica's heritage and invites cross-country skiing enthusiasts to be a part of modern sporting history.
The term Loppet is Scandinavian in origin and refers to a long-distance cross-country skiing event. Whether you are an elite athlete looking to push yourself in a new environment, or a cross-country skiing enthusiast seeking adventure on the White Continent, the Antarctic Loppet provides an incredible opportunity like no other. ALE’s exclusive travel itinerary offers guests the opportunity to learn from specially curated lectures, compete in the timed Antarctic cross-country skiing events, and take part in guided excursions to some stunning Union Glacier locations. Personal ski time and a celebratory event round out this experience which honors cross-country skiing as an important aspect of Antarctic history.
The interior of Antarctica has a cold, dry, windy climate. Average mid-season temperatures at our base camp range from -12°F to 30°F (-24°C to -1°C ). On a sunny windless day it can feel quite warm but, when the wind blows, you will be glad of warm layers and a wind jacket. Temperatures can drop as low as -22°F (-30°C) in early November.
Moderate trips offer adventure with a bit more challenge. They may include walking up to several miles/kilometres on uneven snow and ice; staying in remote field camps; extreme temperatures (–40°F / –40°C); activity at high altitudes (11,000ft / 3350m); or skydiving from 13,000 ft AGL (15,300 ft AMSL) .
Strenuous trips include skiing, climbing, and trekking trips where you spend several days or more in remote field camps and you are active for 6-8 hours a day over steeper, more rugged terrain. They can involve climbing and camping at altitude and in extreme weather conditions. These trips can be tailored to your skills and abilities, however a good level of fitness is essential and some technical skills may be required.
